How to Write a Retail Resume
The retail resume should focus on the 4 major skill areas valued most by retail businesses: communications, trustworthiness, teamwork and enthusiasm for the product or service. If you can demonstrate that you have the Fabulous Four Retail Skills the hiring manager will notice.
Let’s take a look at the “Fabulous Four” areas and see how you can demonstrate your expertise in all of these areas.
Communications
- Attention to details – Check for errors in spelling and grammar. Double check names and contact details.
- List software proficiency, social networking skills and knowledge of internet systems.
- List second languages.
Trustworthiness
- Knowledge of security systems
- Write about any instances where your trustworthiness was proven
- List positions of trust you’ve held in work, community, religious and educational settings.
Teamwork
- Show your willingness to work holidays, weekends and other unpopular shifts.
- Network – Reach out and try to make connections with the staff. If possible include major customers or suppliers as references.
- Show your ability to deal with difficult people. Show examples from your past employment, volunteer work and extracurricular experiences.
- Try to show your diversity with different populations. (Have you worked with the elderly, disabled, specific ethnic groups?)
- Mention any managerial experience.
Enthusiasm for the Product
- List any special knowledge you have about the products being sold.
- List any special knowledge of the area or customers pertinent to the business. (i.e. If you are applying to a children’s clothing store your experience teaching a Sunday Pre School program could be an asset)
Each of the Fabulous Four areas can be demonstrated in your resume writing. Remember to focus on your skills but also look at the needs and unique qualities of the business you are approaching. Look at the requirements mentioned on the job listing and address them. Make sure all the fabulous four areas are addressed throughout your resume.
Retail business is all about sales. Your retail resume is your first chance to sell yourself. Use your excellent communication skills in composing the document. Show your trustworthiness by checking all your facts and providing all requested information. Use networking to connect with staff and people essential to the business and learn about the business and the products they sell. When you demonstrate your abilities to sell yourself you will also demonstrate your abilities to be a great retail employee.
