The retail manager resume needs to merge the qualities necessary for a good retail employee with strong managerial skills. A background in sales or customer service and knowledge of the product or product line will be a plus but supervisory experience is usually required.
Since retail managerial jobs can greatly vary, your ability to analyze and decode the ad or job description can make the difference between getting the interview and having your resume thrown into the discard pile. Take a few minutes to study the ad then use the words chosen by the employer to guide you in your writing job resume.
- Use resume keywords from the ad and job description in your skill headings.
- Use bold type and underlining to emphasis skills mentioned in ad/description with duties you preformed in previous jobs.
- Don’t just list skills but be specific as to how your skills will be a benefit to the business.
- Prioritize your writing to showcase skills which were specifically mentioned and most essential to the business.
- Use the resume power words list and choose words to use in your accomplishment statements for your resume experience.
Stores often promote from within, so you might be competing with employees who know the business and staff. You need to demonstrate why your managerial and sales skills are superior to others who might have a knowledge and familiarity with the store. You might want to highlight past jobs which required some of the following:
- You recruited, hired, trained, assessed and guided employees.
- You managed schedules and daily assignments.
- Handled cash and/or recorded transactions
- You maintained excellent safety records and received awards.
Give examples of resolutions to customer problems and complaints. Describe marketing, PR and merchandising programs you implemented. List specific software you’ve used to manage payroll, inventory and invoices. Give examples of increases in sales and profits which occurred under your management.
Try to find out as much as you can about the store before you begin writing your manager resume. Showing an interest and knowledge in the store, staff, and product will demonstrate the interest and enthusiasm you will bring to the job.
Retail managers need to have a wide range of skills and experiences to be successful. Your resume writing should highlight skills mentioned in the job description and prior experience which will be of benefit to the business. When you are successful selling yourself, you will demonstrate that you will be successful running and selling the store.
