How to Write a Retail Sales Resume
Resume writing for retail sales (also referred to as retail, retail customer service, retail floor sales, sales clerk, or customer service clerk) should demonstrate strong communication skills and customer skills. Your resume needs to be written with impeccable grammar and without typos and spelling errors. If you have little experience or are just entering the job market see the student resume.
You want to impress that you are trustworthy as retail sales involves handling cash, checks, and debit and credit card payments and recording transactions. Any experience that required attention to detail will be helpful on your resume.
Employers are looking for people willing to go the extra mile to help customers and to usually be willing to work nights and weekends and holidays.
Because most stores will have several retail employees working together, any instances where you can show that you have gained teamwork skills can help assure a prospective employer.
- If you have previous retail experience list the relevant duties you performed such as handling returns and exchanges of merchandise, wrapping gifts, opening and closing a store, general maintenance, stocking shelves, accepting deliveries, marking price tags, and taking inventory. Also state any relevant product knowledge you possess.
- If you have demonstrated creative skills such as in preparing displays, making signs, or assisting customers in making choices you can include those abilities.
- If you have any experience recognizing and preventing security risks, or handling difficult people, this can be included on your resume.
Employers look for energetic people with great attitudes. Use resume power words to characterize desirable traits. The ability to speak a second language might be helpful depending on where the job is located.
Many retail establishments promote employees to management. If you have management skills, list them on your resume.
Have references with all contact information prepared to take to an interview. Many retail employers will conduct a background check.
