How to Write Accountants and Auditors Resumes
Because accountants perform many tasks and can specialize in numerous areas, resume writing for accountants, requires more than usual attention to determining the employer needs. Accountants and auditors record the financial transactions of a business or entity to ensure proper adherence to accounting procedures and tax law, produce data for budget analysis, financial forecasting, pricing of products and services, client or customer review, purchases, and more. Auditors are more involved in the verification of data.
First determine the area of accounting you are applying for: There are four major fields of accounting and auditing:
- public
- management
- government accounting
- internal auditing
Public accountants are generally certified as a CPA or Certified Public Accountant. They perform many accounting duties and employers look for specific experience and skills from tax return preparation to offering client consultation for asset protection, debt restructuring,
As public accountants perform a broad range of accounting, determine the skills the employer is seeking. Some investigative work beyond the skills listed in a job posting is often needed. Contact the HR department and find out who will be making the hiring decision and request further information regarding the specific skills required for the position.
If you specialize in forensic accounting list what specific areas you have achievements in. These might include investigating white collar crime including securities fraud, embezzlement, or bankruptcy. State your knowledge of the law and how you obtained it. If you have testified as an expert witness or worked with law enforcement, these statements can assure an employer of your abilities.
As public accountants are often promoted into management accounting positions or internal auditing, list any experience you have in these areas on your resume when applying for a public accounting position. You might also want inquire as to the possibilities of such advancement in your interviews.
A managerial, corporate, or cost accountant generally works for a specific company analyzing the financial information and creating budgets, profit/loss statements, and cost and asset management. Accomplishment statements using power words for management skills

Government accountants and auditors are employed in the public sector.

Because technology is rapidly advancing employers want accountants who are familiar with the latest software and stay informed of industry changes. Some corporations want accountants to analyze computer systems, software, networks, and technology equipment for cost effectiveness and provide input for plans and purchases. Show you are current by listing the software you know, any recent education in new software, technology publications you read, and any RSS or newsfeeds to which you subscribe regarding business technology.
In addition, as tax law changes yearly, any statements that display your diligence in keeping abreast of current tax law gives an employer confidence in your dedication and ability to provide knowledgeable advice.
Since accountants also consult with their employers and clients they also provide advice. Statements of accomplishments that that demonstrate customer skills by providing service to clients and solid communication skills help assure employers. Strong problem solving examples are also helpful.
Create accomplishment statements that exhibit strong mathematical aptitude and analytical skills.
Include your education and designations on your resume which should include at least a bachelor’s degree in business or accounting. In order to be competitive you should have or want to get certified as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
If you are a recent graduate and meet the education or experience requirements of an employer’s job posting inquire about a junior accounting position. Working in the field while you work to become certified will give you valuable experience and possible recognition for advancement.
