How to Write a Bookkeeper Resume

As a bookkeeper you are a financial record keeper. Resume writing for this position requires demonstrating you have the skills that assure the employer you are a desirable candidate for this job.

Because this position often requires keeping track of numbers and calculating results employers want to see a candidate with strong attention to detail. Bookkeepers are often required to write letters, interact with department personnel, and speak with clients, so these employers also like to see you have communication skills and customer skills.

A bookkeeper has a broad range of duties that can include tracking and recording accounts payable, accounts receivable, credit accounts, cash receipts, vendor purchases, invoices, payroll, and other general data entry. It’s hard to imagine a disorganized bookkeeper being able to record mounds of data accurately and in the right places so expressing an instance of organizational skills will help assure a potential employer.

Because this position can involve handling cash, printing checks, and having access to sensitive information, employers also want to see a candidate with a stable work history and easily verifiable references. Your resume should include the company names and addresses where you have been employed.

You should show examples of your ability to compute interest, enter accurate data, understand business finances such as profit and loss statements, and communicate information effectively to clients, coworkers and your superior. Any statement of a specific instance where you were able to save your employer money by catching a mistake or collecting a debt early for example would be beneficial on your resume.

Bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks are often required to meet strict deadlines for payroll, tax reasons, audits, and valuable profit and loss information for managers, owners, and stockholders. In your resume writing include an instance of how you contributed to meet a deadline or how you finished work on time regularly.

No employer wants a bookkeeper they need to stay on top of to get the job done. Accounting is an area most employers do not have the time or desire to think about. They just want access to the information the bookkeepers’ work provides when they need it. A resume writing statement that shows an instance of your self motivation is great.

Some bookkeeping involves auditing which is the review of the work of others. If you have experience reviewing the work of other people include this on a resume for a position that involves any auditing. Use power words that demonstrate competence.

Software - Bookkeepers work with bookkeeping software such as Peachtree or QuickBooks and should know how to use spreadsheets and formulas such as in Microsoft Excel. Also as you might need to write to customers and clients or prepare reports solid experience with a Word processing program is also helpful.

Employers usually request the minimum of a high school diploma for an entry level bookkeeper. Experience is often required for more advanced pay or positions. A business degree is helpful and will usually command higher pay. List your education and include any classes relevant to business and bookkeeping.
Include any certifications you have for bookkeeping or business Certification and advancement.
Certification as a Certified Bookkeeper (CB) designation is available from the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers.
