How to Write a Bookkeeper Resume
As a bookkeeper you are a financial record keeper. Creating a bookkeeper resume requires demonstrating that you have the skills the employer is seeking.
Because this position requires keeping track of numbers accurately and calculating results, employers want to see a candidate with strong attention to details. In addition bookkeepers are often required to write letters, interact with department personnel and other employees, and speak with clients so strong communication skills, teamwork skills, and customer skills are important.
A bookkeeper has a broad range of duties that can include recording accounts payable, accounts receivable, credit accounts, cash receipts, vendor purchases, invoices, payroll, and other general data. It’s hard to imagine a disorganized person being able to record mounds of data accurately and under the correct ledger column so expressing your accomplishments that show organizational skills will help assure a potential employer.
Because this position can involve handing cash, printing checks, and having access to sensitive information, employers want to see a candidate with a stable work history and easily verifiable references. Your resume should include the names and and addresses of your previous employers.
You should show examples of your ability to compute interest, enter accurate data, understand business finances such as profit and loss statements, and communicate information effectively to clients, coworkers, and your superior. Any statement of a specific instance where you were able to save a previous employer money by catching a mistake made by someone, collecting a debt early, or reducing expenses would be beneficial to include on your resume.
Bookkeepers, auditors, and accounting clerks are often required to meet strict deadlines for payroll, tax filings, audits, and imperative profit and loss information for managers, marketing, owners, and stockholders. On your bookkeeper resume include an instance of how you contributed to meeting a critical deadline or finished work on time regularly.
No employer wants a bookkeeper they have to stay on top of to get the job done. Accounting is an area most business owners and executives do not have the time or desire to think about. They just want immediate access to accurate and current data the bookkeeper’s work provides. A good resume writing statement that shows self motivation can exhibit independence.
Some bookkeeping involves auditing which is the review of the work of others. If you have any experience reviewing other people’s work incorporate a statement that demonstrates this for any position that involves auditing. Use power words that demonstrate competence.
Special Requirements for the Bookkeeper Resume
Software- Most employers will include the type of bookkeeping software they would like candidates to have experience using. These packages can be Quickbooks, Peachtree, or one of many others. If you have experience with spreadsheets and Excel formulas that can be helpful. You might also be required to write to customers or clients and prepare reports so written communication skills and the ability to use word processing software can be a benefit.
Employers usually require the minimum education requirement of a high school diploma for an entry level bookkeeper. Experience and more education is often required for more advanced positions. A business, accounting, or finance certification or degree will often bring higher pay. List your education and in particular and classes or certifications that are relevant. Certification as a bookkeeper is available from the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers.
