Resume Objective Statement: The Five Steps to Impress and Persuade Employers

If you watch the evening TV weather forecasts, you will notice that newscasters typically first report what the weather was for the day before they predict the future. This gives their forecast some validity because subconsciously we see that the meteorologist can accurately report the past so we give them credit for being able to predict the future.

You can use this same method of persuasion in your resume objective statement to establish credibility and get an employer to visualize you doing great things for them. Your resume objective statement can be a major factor for employers reviewing your qualifications. Although just a sentence or a few short sentences, the resume objective statement should be able to present your qualifying skills and contributions for the job and create a picture of you doing the same for a potential employer.

There are philosophies that suggest the resume objective is irrelevant. This is only when the message is self centered. A well penned resume objective is a great opportunity for any candidate. Writing an objective for your resume means setting a career goal that’s aligned with the employer’s goals. By being specific about your skills and accomplishments and relating those to potential contributions to the company you shift your message from “what I want” to “what I have done and can do for you.”

Create the resume objective statement worksheet.

2. Take a look at the target job description and make a list of your most relevant skills that the employer is seeking.
3. Create a few WOW phrases for each skill about things you have done.

Match your accomplishment phrases with your future phrases and insert the job title and resume objective words such as “seeking”  “looking for”  “on a quest for” and so on.  Examples of the results of combining past and future phrases:

With a little practice you can do the same with your skills and accomplishments and create a resume objective that impresses employers with your relevant skills and persuades them with a link between those skills and their future.
