Job Interview Questions: The 5 Mistakes that Put You Out The Door
On the big day, most candidates are focused on answering the job interview questions correctly. That’s all you need to do to land the position, right? Just show up, get the job interview questions, and everything will be fine . . . unless you’ve been busy ruining your chances. Here are the five steps that will lead you straight out the door without an offer:
1. Arrive late. This is a big no-no. Unless you’ve been in an accident, arriving late for the interview tells the hiring manager that you don’t value the opportunity. If you’ve not sure where the building is be sure to get there in plenty of time to find it—no one will complain if you’re a few minutes early. Remember, recruiters who are booked back to back may skip you entirely if you’re not there on time.
2. Snub the receptionist. Walking in and being rude to the boss’s gatekeeper is a great way to get your name on the top of the blacklist. Often, hiring managers trust their personal assistants more than they trust their peers.
3. Go in completely unprepared. Nothing impresses a hiring manager more than a candidate who has skipped researching the company and the position. They’ve taken time out of their workday to talk with you, and they expect you to have prepared accordingly to make it worth their while.
4. Act arrogant. Check your attitude at the door. Confidence is an attractive quality in a potential new hire, but cockiness isn’t appreciated.
5. Don’t bother to say thank you. Why should you send a hiring manager a thank-you for their time in interviewing you? It’s their job, and besides, who notices that old-fashioned crap anyway?
